Arduino:4-digit shield running off solar panel

Having fun this weekend using 4-digit shield.

I just purchased a new aero garden and decided to see if the 4-digit shield will run off these lights with a small solar panel.

The $10 panel came from ebay and includes a little lithium battery.

The spec for the panel says:

  • Solar energy board: 5.5V/80mA
  • High capacity build in polymer battery: 1350mAH
  • Output voltage: 5.5V
  • Output current: 1000mA
  • Dimension: 93×44×10(mm)

Turns out that the Arduino runs just fine driving the 4-digit shield and reading temperature from a DS1820 sensor.  Depending on how this thing runs one may have to put the micro to sleep to save some power or perhaps do some other tricks.

4-digit Shield and Netduino

Great news for .NET developers.  They guys over at Secret Labs have tested  Netduino with the ShieldStudio 4-digit shield and verified compatibility.  I’ve posted some sample Netduino code on how to drive the 4-digit shield with a Netduino board.

Arduino : QuadMotor shield now available.

Use Arduino to drive  robotic platform motors with the QuadMotor shield.

This high power motor shield can drive 4 DC motors with a supply voltage of up to 46V and a DC current of up to 4A DC per channel.

Arduino : 5×7 shield filters

What a difference light filters make when viewing 5×7 displays.  Our 5×7 4-digit shield ships with one of these oversized filters.  You can cut them to the exact size needed by your bevel.

Arduino:4Digit Shield update

+6C

Too cold to go out so time is spent creating a library for driving the ShieldStudio 4-digit shield.

Using 4-digit shield with my new library to display temperature remotely from the garage.  The arrow is done using one of the custom characters in the 4-digit shield library and is used to indicate temperature trend.

Display drivers arrived

We are nearing the end of component procuring. Some outstanding resistors and caps from Jameco will be here in two or three days.

Stuck in Customs

Components are stuck in Vancouver customs and I cannot start building display shields for the store.  Hopefully this week things will start to shape up and I can put some Arduino 4-digit shields out for sale.  It is worth the wait for this shield as it is super useful and low power too.

Some 4-digit shield features

  • 4 x 1.25″ displays
  • Fully alpha numeric
  • I2C interface from Arduino/Freeduino
  • Low power – No external power needed
  • Easy to use – Built in character map makes using this shield very easy.
  • Digital brightness control – Brightness can be set from code with only a few lines.

Components on its way

Got an email that the connectors were mailed yesterday. Should be up and running by end next week. This display shield will work really well in Arduino.  I need to get the workshop cleaned out so assembly can begin soon.  Pictures will be taken of the prototypes this weekend.

Coming soon !!!

We have 2 new shields coming soon to ShieldStudio.

We are still waiting for stock on these items but it looks like the first one out the gate would probably be the high-power quad motor shield by J. Wong.  This shield will ship fully built and tested so watch this space for news in the coming week.

The second shield is our 4-Digit shield.  I’ve been using this shield for the past few months and are very happy with its performance so far.  Components are arriving as I type and hope fully in the next 2-3 weeks it will be all built and ready for shipping.
